Terms and Conditions of Entry

The Maldon Portrait Prize (Photography) is open to all photographers over the age of 18; professional, emerging or amateur.  All entries will be judged anonymously with no prior knowledge of artist. Entrants are expected to abide by this stipulation.  They will not publish images of entries on social media including but not limited to Instagram, website, Facebook or avenues of publicity identified as that of the artist prior to the final judging and announcement of the winner. Any entries in breach of this request will be disqualified.

1. The portrait subject must be known to the artist, aware of the artist’s intention and a resident of Australia, identifying as such on the model consent form.

2. Each artist may submit a maximum of two entries. A separate entry form and non-refundable application fee of $35, which must be paid online, is to accompany each individual entry. Entries will not be accepted for consideration until the fee is paid.

3. The portrait:

  1. Must be an original work, executed and owned by the submitting artist, and recently complete. It may be in black and white or colour.

  2. All entries will be exhibited on line unless the artist elects not to be shown.

The artist warrants that the work submitted is original and does not infringe the copyright, moral rights or other rights of any third party, and that he or she owns all rights and interests in the work submitted. The artist will indemnify and keep indemnified the Maldon Portrait Prize and their sponsors and agents against any claim by a third party in relation to the work.

4. Entries must be submitted via online entry only and include:

  1. Artist details including email address, telephone contact

  2. Short artist statement including date the portrait was photographed.

  3. Name and location of subject.

  4. A completed model consent form.

  5. All photographic files must be submitted as JPEG files (TIFF files will not be accepted as a valid entry) at 300dpi sized appropriately at 2,400 pixels on the long edge for web display and initial judging.

  6. All entries must have the potential capacity for 300 dpi files for exhibition printing should your work be chosen as a finalist image.

  7. Maldon Portrait Prize organisers will not be able to answer technical questions regarding file submissions so please seek external advice or research regarding correct file sizing.

5. All entries MUST be received before 5pm on Tuesday 4 January 2022. There will be no exceptions.


SELECTION OF FINALISTS.


6. There will be one round of judging in pre-selection. 

  1. A panel of three expert, independent judges will select up to a maximum of forty portraits as finalists for exhibition and final judging at Edge galleries, Maldon. There may be less.

  2. Finalists will be notified by email by Monday 17 January 2022.

  3. All works entered will be shown online and eligible for an Audience Vote Award by online vote. Please note only one vote per email address will be accepted.

  4. The judges’ decision will be final, non-negotiable and no discussion will be entered into.


FINALISTS.

7. All finalist exhibition prints (non-framed) must be delivered to Edge Galleries, 35-37 Main Street, Maldon, Victoria 3463 on Thursday 17 February 2022, between 12 and 7pm unless by prior arrangement. All mailed finalist prints must arrive by the above date.

  1. All finalists will provide a jpeg file of 300dpi (minimum 2,400 pixels on the long edge) for potential print publicity uses by Maldon Portrait Prize by 14 January 2022.

  2. Entries will have a maximum total print size of 70cm wide including border.

  3. Only unframed prints will be accepted as all finalist prints will be pinned for exhibition.

  4. All prints must have a white border between 3cm and 10cm relational to the image (see maximum total print size above) because they will be wall pinned on the border by Edge galleries to provide equality of exhibition aesthetic and for judging.

  5. Prints not meeting these strict guidelines will not be accepted and will forfeit finalist status.

  6. Professional high-resolution printing is mandatory to show the work to its best advantage in a gallery setting for judging .

  7. Prints must be appropriately packed and protected from damage whether delivering by hand or by mail/courier.

  8. Insurance of the work is highly recommended during periods of travel and is the responsibility of the artist. All reasonable care will be taken during the exhibition. MANet is insured for damage and loss of the work during the exhibition.

  9. Edge Galleries will determine where each image will be exhibited and will not enter into discussion or negotiation for placement of images.

  10. All prints must be labelled on the back lower left-hand side with title of portrait, name of photographic artist, name of subject, artist contact details including email address and telephone contact legibly printed.

  11. The artist may also nominate a sale price underneath artist details on the entry form. Maldon Portrait Prize will take a 20% commission so please factor this into the sale price.

  12. Please indicate the number of editions you are happy to offer for sale (usually fifteen or less for fine art prints).

  13. If you do not wish to sell your work, please indicate NFS on the entry form.

 8. From the selected finalists works the nominated Maldon PORTRAIT PRIZE  PHOTOGRAPHY judge will decide on the First Prize winner of $5,000. There will also be a People’s Choice award of $500 determined by votes received from the online exhibition AUDIENCE.

9. The winning artwork will be decided by an independent judge, prominent and respected within the Australian arts community. Judge to be announced.

10. The winner of the $5,000 Prize will be announced at the opening of the 2022 Maldon Portrait Prize "I Be Human" Exhibition on Saturday, 19th February 2022.

11. The Prize is non-acquisitive. 

12. Finalist exhibited portraits must be collected from Edge galleries on Sunday 27 February 2022 between 3 – 5 pm. No exceptions unless by prior arrangement. 

13. It is the artist’s responsibility to organise delivery and collection of artworks and payment of all courier/mailing including any packaging for return delivery.

14. The judges have absolute discretion in selecting the finalists and winners and the judges' decision will be final and is non-negotiable with no correspondence entered into.

15. The artist agrees that all works entered may be used as promotion of the exhibition and the Maldon Photographic Portrait Prize across all media. Artist attribution will always be made, but the organisation is not responsible for third party error in attribution.

16. Copyright remains with THE ARTIST  at all times.
